Sean Montgomery is an artist from Edmonton, Alberta, who currently lives and works Montreal and Ithaca, New York. He holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and a MFA from Concordia University.
Montgomery’s new series of paintings continues his investigations on notions of masculinity specifically its representation through Canadian iconography. The artist also examines artistic hierarchies as these concerns relate to painting itself and the history of abstraction.
In his recent exhibition “Building Bildung” the artist makes reference to the german word “Bildung” which does not really translate into other languages. It is related to issues of education (both learning and teaching), culture, formation, creation, and the spiritual and personal development of the individual.’ Combining this with iconographic symbols of masculinity such as sports logos, beer labels and other objects, the artist questions notions of masculinity and how these symbols relate to painting and notions of modernist purity.
